Choosing a Bank

Why your bank can make a difference for us

Lawyers and title agents can significantly enhance the funds that are available for serving the legal needs of the poor by taking their IOLTA/IOTA accounts to financial institutions that have a favorable policy on yields and service charges.

Statewide, there are average balances of more than $450 million on deposit in banks across the state in IOLTA/IOTA accounts. Yet some banks pay yields of under even 1 percent on the accounts, negatively impacting funds available for legal services programs for the poor.

Please ask your financial institution about the yield they pay on these accounts and encourage them to raise the yield. The policies on service charges and interest rates greatly impact the funds available for legal services throughout the state.

We salute the institutions -- big and small -- that have made a strong commitment to honor the statutory requirements surrounding the IOLTA/IOTA program and urge you to bank at an IOLTA/IOTA-friendly institution.

The best yields at banks that have statewide coverage can be found at Charter One, US Bank, National City Bank and Key Bank.

If you do not see the bank that you would like to use to open up an IOLTA/IOTA account on this list, please ask that bank's personnel to contact us so that they may become an eligible IOLTA/IOTA bank.
